Chang Theatre

WELCOME TO 2018 :

Performances of Pichet Klunchun and Pichet Klunchun Dance Company will be restaged in 2018 including Nijinsky Siam (April), Black and White (June) and Gentlemen (November).

In March 2018, we are delighted to welcome the leading contemporary French choreographer, Jérôme Bel, to our theatre.  Chang Theatre is so proud to present the collaborative work between Pichet Klunchun and Jérôme Bel, “Pichet Klunchun and Myself” on March 3-4.

Pichet Klunchun and Myself” is a clever theatrical presentation of an encounter between two dancers from very different traditions who know nothing about each other, who have very different aesthetical practices and who both try to know more about the other, and above all about their respective artistic practices, despite the abyssal cultural gap dividing them.

The piece stages the meeting between the French choreographer Jérôme Bel and traditional Thai dancer Pichet Klunchun, a master of “Khon,” a Thai classical dance practice. Jérôme Bel simply has a conversation with Pichet Klunchun, about their work, the world and life. Through a lively mixture of physical demonstration and spirited verbal debate, the piece documents Bel and Klunchun’s lucid, humorous quest for understanding one another. During the piece, both try to find out more about each other, and above all about their respective artistic practices. They present a theatrical report of their original meeting, which evolves into meditations on inter-culturalism, and cultural globalization.

Furthermore, on March 6-7, Ambassador de France en Thailand and Chang Theatre proudly present “Gala”, another work conceived and directly by Jérôme Bel. Gala” is a liberating show that encourages us, the audience, to re-consider the judgements we make watching performers on stage.

Gala is about lots of people, professional dancers, actors, but also amateurs of all ages and walks of life, showing their dance just as much as their dance shows them. Gala is a captivating showcase for all admirers of dance.

Through their movement, the gentle humanity of each performer lights up this inspired production. Breaking the sanctity of the stage, this is a jumble of joys, failures, and stumbling insights into the uniting power of dance. Gala suggests that theater is community, both onstage and off. It’s a tour de force, wildly entertaining and truly radical.
